THE MAXINE GREENE HIGH SCHOOL FOR IMAGINATIVE INQUIRY

The Maxine Greene High School For Imaginative Inquiry (MGHS) is a learning community in which deep engagement with works of art integrated across the curriculum enhances the intellectual rigor expected of all students. This work is based on the philosophy of the late Maxine Greene, Philosopher-in-Residence at Lincoln Center Education (LCE), and the exploration of the LCE Capacities for Imaginative Learning which comprise our academic language used to support student success. In addition, through our Restorative Practices, MGHS works to foster the sense of self-worth, empathy and agency necessary for students to become participatory citizens who will create a more just, humane and vibrant world.

DANCING CLASSROOMS

Dancing Classrooms’ mission is to cultivate essential life skills in children through the art of social dance.  Its vision is to help create schools and communities where every child is connected, respected, and provided a safe environment in which to thrive.
Dancing Classrooms was launched in 1994 as a not-for-profit project of the American Ballroom Theater Company (ABrT) in New York City. It is an arts program teaching ballroom dance to the upper elementary and middle school students of participating schools throughout the five boroughs. ABrT was founded in 1984 as a ballroom dance performing arts company under the direction of Pierre Dulaine, Yvonne Marceau and Otto Cappel.  Dulaine and Marceau were acclaimed and award winning ballroom dancers whose notable awards include the 1977-79 and ‘82 British Exhibition Championships, the Fred Astaire Award for Best Dance on Broadway, Dance Magazine’s award for excellence, the NDCA award, the Dance Educators of America award, and the Americans for the Arts “Arts in Education” 2005 award.
Dancing Classrooms programs address several pressing needs simultaneously: the in-school residency provides high quality arts education where it is otherwise lacking, and the extra-curricular programs offer consistent positive engagement with the support of a network of Teaching Artists and peers.
